We have a partial Lunar Eclipse at 4° Pisces on 28 August 2026, with the Moon opposite the Virgo Sun-Mercury conjunction tightly in square to Uranus at 5° Gemini. As the lunar nodes have now crossed into Leo and Aquarius and will remain there until March 2028.

Immediately after the eclipse, Mars moves towards its square with Saturn. Mars wants to act while Saturn limits, blocks or imposes consequence, which means in the days following this eclipse we meet a frustration of unyielding forces.

This Full Moon occurs some way from the exact nodal axis, which is why it is a partial eclipse. And full moon or new moon for that matter happening in a different sign to the nodes is what makes it partial. So although this eclipse belongs to the last remnants of the Virgo–Pisces eclipse story, it takes place within the entirely new nodal terrain of Leo-Aquarius.

My last post was concerned with power: individual power, collective power, and what happens when power changes hands, and whether we (and astrologers!) can stop treating Leo-Aquarius as another simplistic binary in which one must be overcome by the other.

Solar eclipses and lunar eclipses are different creatures. A solar eclipse, which obscures the Sun, which we had on 12 August, brings the sovereign individual directly into the territory of the Moon and relationship. Then this lunar eclipse brings something to visibility or exposure through the opposition of the Sun and Moon. It brings tensions, contradictions and information into a clearer form even when we still don’t know what to do with what has emerged.

This being a Pisces Moon opposing the Virgo Sun-Mercury conjunction which is in square to Uranus, all forms a highly charged mutable T-square. The unexpected elements of this eclipse are brought in by Uranus. And the focus is on perception, information, interpretation and what happens when something enters the picture that doesn’t fit the explanation we already have, is the combination of it all.

Mercury also rules both Virgo and Gemini, which gives Mercury a particularly important role in the structure of this eclipse. It connects the Virgo Sun with Uranus in Gemini (which are also in need of integration at this eclipse time). Detailed discrimination, forming connections, incoming information and the possibility of a radically shifts in perspective are all linked up.

This eclipse is also occurring within a much bigger astrological transition. As I have mentioned before, outer planets Pluto now in Aquarius, Neptune newly in Aries and Uranus in Gemini since only recently, within a compressed period of time (a year ish), means completely new chapters for us all. These cycles extend far beyond this particular eclipse season, but eclipses also often concentrate what has been developing beneath the surface for years.

There’s something rather beautiful about the timing. The nodes moved into Leo and Aquarius in late July, yet this eclipse reaches backwards into Pisces and Virgo, as though the new story begun is connected or belongs to the previous chapter.

The Virgo–Pisces eclipses we have already had raised questions around discernment and surrender, order and uncertainty, intervention and acceptance, what can be differentiated and what cannot. Now Leo–Aquarius brings in another polarity: the individual and the collective, personal conscience and shared judgement, the sovereign centre and the group within which that individual must somehow live.

Put those two axes together—Pisces-Virgo and Aquarius-Leo and it’s something like, how do we, either as individuals or groups, exercise judgement when there’s ambiguity, contradictions and uncertainty?

Virgo wants to distinguish, assess and determine what is actually true, while Pisces reminds us that reality cannot always be completely known, measured or resolved. That there’s a much bigger picture that we will might never know. Aquarius–Leo asks what happens when that uncertainty enters the relationship between the individual and the group.

Yet often we have no choice but to move into the next chapter before we have fully understood the previous one. Perhaps this eclipse brings us back to precisely the Virgo–Pisces territory that still needs to be understood differently, before we can enter the Leo–Aquarius questions with any real wisdom and I’m not sure we have fully understood that collectively yet.

Virgo examines what is actually there, while Pisces remains receptive to realities that cannot be measured. We need both. Perhaps this final Pisces eclipse isn’t asking us to abandon any side of the polarity. Perhaps it is asking whether our discernment has become sophisticated enough to include the limits of what we know and what we do not yet know, and perhaps never will know.

Our tendency to decide the meaning of things even when it’s difficult to ascertain or not the right time is just highlighting again how certainty is much easier to step into than remaining with something unclear, particularly when whatever we are dealing with is emotionally charged or there’s pressure to arrive at a position.

There’s a difference between reaching the best conclusion available to us and believing that our conclusion contains the whole truth. We can examine evidence, listen carefully, notice inconsistencies, make judgements and sometimes be required to act upon them, while still recognising that there may be dimensions of reality that remain inaccessible from where we are standing. We have to be able to hold multiple realities at once, and honour them.

And we can’t forget that facts do not interpret themselves; we as human beings are needed to decide what is significant, how things relate, what larger context they belong within. Two people can encounter the same thing and still organise it into very different pictures.

This is where the new Leo–Aquarius nodal territory enters almost immediately. Since once enough people share an interpretation or position, it begins to acquire another kind of authority altogether, because what began as an interpretation can gradually become experienced as truth. This is the direction of growth we are being asked to negotiate both individually and collectively.

There is yet another important layer underneath all of these outer planets. Pluto and Neptune are moving through their long-running flowing sextile, but this eclipse meets awkwardly with those planets in quincunx. Neptune adds in projection and idealisation, and Pluto speaks to how the hidden, unconscious world may influence how we view things. Then Uranus in square disrupts, shocks and reveals with the unexpected fact that suddenly changes how everything else is organised. Uranus is only interested in breaking open the frame or lens through which we have been looking.

What appears to be happening here is that the issue is that the structure through which we are interpreting our reality is just too narrow to contain what is coming through. So this is simply not about now switching our allegiance from one explanation or side to another. Uranus is about a force arriving that wants to broaden the frame itself, so that the apparently contradictory pieces of information can be held within a larger, more radical structure altogether.

It is not enough just to believe ourselves to be open-minded. We have to recognise that the frames through which we interpret reality may themselves be part of the problem.

We are being shown or taught rather that, several realities are true at once. We have enormous difficulty with this because the mind likes mutually exclusive explanations. If this is true, that must be false; if this person is harmed, that person must be the villain; if this explanation accounts for part of the story, then contradicting or competing explanations are threats.

The opportunity for us at this time is neither abandoning competing realities nor forcing everything into one undifferentiated whole, but recognising where realities can coexist without being reducible to one another.

Yes there are absolutely times when we cannot remain indefinitely in uncertainty. Choices need to be made—decisions reached, diagnoses made, things completed. And sometimes we do not have all the information we would like. Making a decision and possessing the whole truth are not the same thing. We can answer a specific question while leaving vast areas of human, psychological and even spiritual realities completely untouched.

Aquarius sees the patterns, but a pattern is never more real than the human beings through whom that pattern is being expressed, because once someone represents something larger it becomes increasingly easy to stop seeing whatever doesn’t fit the category. Pisces asks whether we can encounter that human being, that humanity that remains while not losing sight of our need to discriminate between actions, responsibilities and consequences.

We can’t get away from the need for collective judgement as we live among each other, and our actions and societies require agreements, boundaries and processes through which life can be upheld. But that doesn’t or shouldn’t mean that collective judgement is translated into truth itself. This is where we need to be careful with Pluto moving slowly through Aquarius and the north node is Aquarius too—we have to go as slow as Pluto is!

It reminds me also that collective forces can move through an individual, whether willingly or consciously received or not. And perhaps this asks us to leave open a more unsettling question: how much of what moves through a person can truly be understood as belonging to that person alone? This emerging question is very much for these times.

The speed is also such a factor. The masculine signs are abound with planets. Uranus in Gemini means that when we encounter something it comes with so much more than the event itself. We are bombarded with an opinion, reaction, and judgement almost simultaneously.

And this is where we confront issues, as a collective interpretation can crystallise very quickly. Once it does, how do we go backwards? And one person in disagreement threatens the collective understanding around which everybody else has already organised themselves.

We must be open to understanding this individual and collective journey, be willing to ask the harder questions beneath it. What is actually making the choice? Where does agency lie? And can we be courageous enough to bring those deeper questions into a family, a group or society when everyone else has already agreed upon what is happening?

If a group or community can only remain stable while its members share and voice the same opinions, then it has not transcended authoritarianism. A genuinely mature group should arguably be capable of greater difference, not less. It should be strong enough to contain individuals who disagree, question the dominant interpretation or introduce inconvenient information. We need to ask the question what forms such a container? What are it’s ingredients?

And we have to come back to power as the collective growth now is understanding when challenging power becomes power itself. Pluto never stops being Pluto. If people start to become convinced that their purpose is righteous, we will have a problem, especially if it becomes bound up with a group.

What’s super interesting at the eclipse is that Mars returns in bounds. This brings the question of agency directly into focus. What is actually acting through us? How confidently can we assign agency?

What happens when something that has exceeded our recognised boundaries of both our individual self or the larger society, has to be brought back within a structure capable of holding and interpreting it? And is that structure, whether it’s ours or beyond us, actually large enough to understand what has occurred? These are very big questions for humanity.

There are countless accounts of moments in which something happens through us without any conscious decision on our part. Times when our body is not our own. I can think of many examples, my own and those of friends or clients, of extraordinary interventions and unbidden forces that seem to enter human experience with an agency of their own. Some appear protective or miraculous; others are disturbing, destructive or profoundly difficult to make sense of. They span trans-mediumship, spiritual traditions, embodied practices and especially extreme states labelled as psychosis, where our body is temporarily taken over.

This is not about being ‘guided’. No guidance belongs here. This is where we are physically pushed, pulled or moved by something we do not recognise as us. We can give these experiences many different explanations, especially in retrospect, but we cannot pretend that we fully understand who or what is acting and where the agency lies.

And who gets to decide whether these are positive or negative forces? From what level of understanding is that judgement being made? What appears protective, destructive or senseless from our immediate human perspective may look very different across another timescale or through a wider lens. So we are truly honest with ourselves, we are left again with the uncomfortable question of how much do we really know about what is moving through us and why? What is being asked of us here? Are we even interested in these questions?

Eclipse language tends to be full of invitations to decide what we are “ready to release”, as though life waits politely for our consent. I don’t think this is now so much of our future. And this eclipse is an example of how we need to get used to life being considerably less within our control. In other words, get more prepared for circumstances to change before we believe we are ready for that change. Transformation rarely happens in an orderly fashion. We tend to believe very little in our deeper resilience until we are faced with the deepest challenges. And sometimes the things that survive eclipses tells us more about ourselves.

Perhaps this is where the Pisces eclipse takes the previous Leo eclipse forward. Sovereignty and control are really not the same thing, although we often behave like they are. Sovereignty is about where we stand in relationship to what happens, which includes the circumstances, people, decisions and forces that remain completely outside of our control, since we cannot control what others believes about us. If we depend upon controlling external forces, then that’s fragility, and not really sovereignty at all.

And there is another consequence to all of this that feels increasingly important. If we cannot tolerate uncertainty, we will eventually feel forced to place certainty somewhere. Different people choose different authorities for their certainty, but the underlying movement is always that something must remove the unbearable uncertainty.

Uranus’ presence in Gemini at this eclipse might then contain a different form of freedom. Freedom isn’t only the freedom to say what we think and be who we want to be; it is also the freedom to change our thinking when reality presents us with something new. Once an opinion is part of our identity or sense of belonging, changing our mind can feel like betrayal: of ourselves, of our community, but if sovereignty is about remaining free enough to respond to reality. Otherwise our apparent fixed opinion has become yet another authority over us.

And this brings me back to relationship. That we are to neither dominate others or be swallowed by the collective. Can we remain in relationship with one another when we do not share the same interpretation of reality, because we are functioning from different levels? Agreement is a relatively easy relationship. But in difference we discover whether a relationship actually exists.

And Pisces can take this even further. Perhaps relationship isn’t only about our capacity to remain with other people but our capacity to remain in contact with the unknown itself. There are things we may never completely understand about another person, our own lives or events we have lived through. We can spend years forcing those experiences into explanations.

And this is the bridge for me. The Virgo–Pisces nodal axis and past eclipses have been teaching us how we discern and surrender, how we know or never know. And how we live with realities that cannot always be reconciled in our minds. The new Leo–Aquarius nodal axis now asks what we do with that. Can we remain true to our own experience while allowing someone else to inhabit an entirely different reality? Perhaps the next stage of our growth depends upon what we have actually learned from the last.

The eclipse two weeks ago asked where power is moving. This one asks whether we possess enough inner sovereignty to meet that movement without either disappearing into it or needing to dominate over it. So this final Pisces eclipse feels to me more like threshold between the nodes. We are carrying the unresolved questions of Pisces–Virgo directly into the emerging Leo–Aquarius.

And this is where we discover that sovereignty is not how it is usually defined, its something more than freedom, autonomy or independence. Clearly we are still discovering what sovereignty actually is. If currently on this planet, total personal agency is itself something of a fiction, then sovereignty cannot simply mean becoming the sole authority over ourselves. And as consciousness changes, perhaps even our understanding of who—or what—is sovereign will have to change with it.
